The nature and size of this particular artifact requires from the artists and the collaborators involved a lot of adjustments and the ability to adapt to unpredictable circumstances. After a lengthy process of trial and error, which demonstrated how challenging it can be to install ad hoc artworks in this particular space, Chinese Canadian artist Xiaojing Yan agreed to create a living sculpture growing in and with the Emergent Gallery

This first version of Emergent features three varieties of Oyster mushrooms whose growth has been recorded during the span of 3 weeks and displayed as a time lapse inside the gallery. Meanwhile, the mushrooms will continue to fruit and reshape the sculptural component of the installation.

This version of Emergent debuted at the Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University on May 7, 2023 and will travel to the University of Toronto’s Glendon Campus in the Fall 2023
