The nature and size of this particular artifact requires from the artists and the collaborators involved a lot of adjustments and the ability to adapt to unpredictable circumstances. After a lengthy process of trial and error, which demonstrated how challenging it can be to install ad hoc artworks in this particular space, Chinese Canadian artist Xiaojing Yan agreed to create a living sculpture growing in and with the Emergent Gallery
This first version of Emergent features three varieties of Oyster mushrooms whose growth has been recorded during the span of 3 weeks and displayed as a time lapse inside the gallery. Meanwhile, the mushrooms will continue to fruit and reshape the sculptural component of the installation.
